Kayak Exercise ("Kayakercize") Classes - Cross training for kayakers, adventure racers or those looking to build some paddling power
Why not end your day with an invigorating on-water class!
Kayakercize is an activity that offers anyone with interest the opportunity to combine a fantastic core work out with basic to advanced kayak drills, techniques and games.
Due to the "paddle friendly" design of our kayakercize boats, you do not need to be proficient in kayaking to participate. We do however require that you have previous kayaking experience.
Each class does start with on-land warm-up, stretching and core strengthening before heading out onto the water for your main work-out.
Monday paddles are run by Jay and James and are focused more on the endurance style paddles. We get into regular touring kayaks and work on cadence, paddle captures and cover some distance as a group.
Wednesday and Fridays are more like "spin" classes or circuit training for kayaks. These are run by Bryan, Michael and James. They don't cover great distances but rather work of sets, repetition games and challenges.

James Kowalewski is co-founder of the kayakercize program along with his brother Andrew (currently running kayakercize in Australia). Kayakercize was originally developed to help James train for and adventure race but with very limited time to do so. James has been canoe and kayak instructor for the past 13 years and has currently focused his attention to training and competing in the 70.3 1/2 ironman triathlon distance.
Jay Hahn started adventure racing in 2002 with a 36-hour race in the wilds of New Liskeard. He’s been hooked on 24-hour-plus adventure races ever since, including 24-hour race wins in Quebec and New Brunswick, and completing the 3-day Michigan Coast-to-Coast race. Today, he is the race director and course designer for the Angry Seagull Adventure Race, the only overnight adventure race in Ontario. Away from adventure racing, Jay teaches first aid, trains swim instructors and lifeguards, works as a community aquatic coordinator and tries to squeeze in as much AR training as he can.
Michael Johnstone (Mj) is a long-time adventure sports enthusiast with a particular love for water sports. He brings his years of experience as an adventure racer, dragon boat coach and fitness instructors to our kayak fitness program, and promotes a positive, high energy approach to training. You'll find a bit of humour, a lot of hard work, and hopefully new personal rewards in his sessions. Irreverent, irrepressible and always challenging, Mj enjoys helping athletes achieve their goals and potential.
